Endoscopic Procedures
Endoscopy generally involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera (an endoscope) through a natural body opening (like the mouth, anus, or urethra) to examine internal organs or passages. It’s often used for diagnosis, biopsy, and minor interventions.
Common Endoscopic Procedures:
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) / Upper Endoscopy / Gastroscopy: Examination of the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
- Colonoscopy: Examination of the entire large intestine (colon) and rectum. Primarily used for colorectal cancer screening.
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: Examination of the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon) and rectum.
- Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): Combines endoscopy and X-rays to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. Can be used to remove gallstones, place stents, or take biopsies.
- Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): Uses an endoscope with an ultrasound probe to create detailed images of the digestive tract lining and nearby organs (like the pancreas, liver, and lymph nodes).
- Bronchoscopy: Examination of the trachea (windpipe) and lungs/airways by inserting a scope through the mouth or nose.
- Cystoscopy: Examination of the urethra and bladder by inserting a scope through the urethra. Used to diagnose urinary tract issues, remove stones, or take biopsies.
- Hysteroscopy: Examination of the uterus by inserting a scope through the vagina and cervix. Used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, or polyps.
- Laryngoscopy: Examination of the voice box (larynx).
- Anoscopy/Proctoscopy: Examination of the anus and rectum.
- Arthroscopy: Examination and treatment of joints (e.g., knee, shoulder, hip) through small incisions. Often referred to as “keyhole surgery” for joints.
- Neuroendoscopy: Used in neurosurgery to access and treat conditions within the brain or spinal cord through small incisions or natural openings.
